A sotnia in Irklyiv (1648-1782)
A sotnia (cossack squadron of 100 cossacks) in Irklyiv (1648-1782)

Irklyiv sotnia belongs to the oldest cossack squadrons on the left bench of the Dnieper river. It first appeared at the early 30’s of the XVII century as a part of cossack regiment in Pereyaslav. It was a part of Rich Pospoluta. According to the register in 1638 the sotnik (lieutenant of cossacks) was Papkevuch Mys’ko (Matviy Pankevych). The otaman (cossack chieftain) was Gavrylo Kulaga. At the beginning of 1648 the Irklyiv sotnia was a part of the Bogdan Khmelnyzkyi army. In 1648-1649 a separate Irklyiv regiment was created and the Irklyiv sotnia was a part of the Irklyiv regiment. Myhail Teluchenko was the leader of Irklyiv regiment. According to the Zboriv agreement of the October 16, 1649 the number of cossac divisions reduced and the the Irklyiv sotnia with 3 other divisions (that made 631 Cossacks ) moved to Kropuvna regiment.
Hetman Vugovskyi dissolved Kropuvna regiment in 1658 and during the 1658-1663 the Irklyiv regiment was revived again. The colonel  of Irklyiv regiment in 1658-1663 was Matviy Pankevych. In 1663 hetman I. Bruhovetzkyi liquidated Irklyiv regiment because the Irklyiv regiment supported his political opponent. A former Irklyiv regiment sotnia became a part of Pereyaslav regiment. Fron 1663 to the complete liquidation in 1782 the Irklyiv sotnia was a military and an administrative unit of Pereyaslav regiment. The center of Pereyaslav regiment was the city Irklyiv (now the village Irklyiv, Chornobay region near Cherkassy).
