In spring 1933 Matrona Kosetska eat cane
![]() Matrona Kosetzka is a villager of Geronumivka, a village near Cherkassy. She shows a 100 years old handmade towel. On the 17th of November she celebrated her 79th birthday. Her husband died 4 years ago and now granny left alone in her flat. Her children are grownups and they live separately. She has 2 daughters and a son. Nina is 55 years old. Luba is 54, they both live in Kremenchug. Michail is 51, he lives in the village Geronumivka. Matrona was the eldest among her 5 brothers and sisters. Her parents Andriy Markiyanovych Zakharchenko and Ganna Semenivna Zakharchenko. They lived in the village Samovicya (now village Lenynske in Drabiv region). Matrona was only 4 years old when famishment began. Sometimes they managed to find only a handful of millet. They share it to survive. Even now she couldn’t help crying when recalls these horrible days. Matrona remembers that her family was rich. They had enough of everything but when the Soviet military division came they took everything, even the glass from the windows. Their large family hardly managed to survive during the winter. At spring the first leaves saved the family. They ate everything even the grass. Later they lived in poverty. In 1936 Kateryna was born and in 1939 – Peter. When she was 8 Matrona started to go to school. During the German occupation she almost got to the German labor camp. She managed to escape. Even after the World War II the time was very hard. People received only 200 grams of bread a day. Even now she is trying to hide bread and stuff. In 1949 – Matrona moved to Donbas. She started to work there. Matrona helped to repair the rail way station in Makyivka. She did all the hard work. In a year she left to the village Krasnuy Luch near Lugansk. There she worked in a mine. For all the money earned she used to buy textile materials and send it home. Bread and water was her usual meal. There she met her future husband. All the working stuff lived in dormitory, so they had to live there for a year. Then they moved for 7 years into a very poor house. Matrona has 20 photo albums. This is her biggest treasure. She loves to look over and over again her wedding photos and her daughter’s wedding photos. 1928, 17 November was born Matrona Kosetzka in the village Samovicya 1949 — moved to Makyivka near Donetzk 1951 – got married with Mychhail Kozetzkyi 1952 — her daughter Nina was born; moved to village Beregana in Khmelnitzkyi region. 1953 — her second daughter Nina was born 1956 – her son Mychhail was born 1975 – moved to the village of Geronumivka near Cherkassy. 1981 – visited 12 cities in the Soviet union that were named the Cities - Heroes. 1983 - retired on a pension 2001 – celebrated 50 years of marriage with her husband 2003 – husband died | |
