Village Samovicya covered water
 A photo in Ivan Gonchar Musem in Kiev 9 August 1895 It is annual feast for the poor in the saint Panteleymon day in the village Samovicya (Zolotonosha area, Kiev region). In 1959 the village was submerged. The villagers heard for the first time about the submersion in the early 1950’s when the construction of power station on the Dnieper river started. People couldn’t even believe it at first. How the government can do that?! This is our land! It was a very rich soil. A man who informed us about the submersion was the first to leave his home. He moved to Cherkassy. Sudir Zavalko(92 years old) was the head of the village for 20 years. Great changes came. Now, the village Samovicya of Irklyiv region became village Lenynske of Chornobay region. The village changed not only it’s name but also its location. When I was born in 1917 – the was water in side our house. It was usual for the annual floods. But people were not ready to leave their homes. In 1955 a woodcutters from Zakarpattya(western Ukraine) appeared in the village. Soon they started to cut wood. Soon, a commission for the estimation of property came. They gave a half of payment in advance, the rest after migration. Even a department was made to help people with migration. The village was transferred 35 kilometers away from its prior location. Now it’s a village Lenynske. The village was divided in blocks 200 meters long and wide. In June 1956 people were given the land - a garden (with an area) of two hundred square meters. The area was divided by chance. The water was 18 meters underground. The furst year 14 houses were built, next year 48 buildings were ready. The rest of the houses and buildings were made during 1958-1959. The first school was made in a usual house, later in 1960 a new two story school was open in the village. The village graveyard was also taken to the new place. Sudir Zavalko with his family moved to Lenynske in November 4, 1958. The submersion continued from the Spring to Autumn 1959. People used to come to their old houses during the whole that period. A certain part of people from the submerged villages moved to the Krimea, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Odessa. One villager racall that after 1 years after the submersion on the way to Cherkassy, he passed by his old village. It was under water but he saw a tree. It was a top of the tree on his former yard. That night he couldn’t fall asleep. Quotations In our village all people believed in God. Than after dinner we used to sing spiritual songs "God save us”. We had this tradition even during the USSR period. (Sudir Zavalko, was the head of the village for 20 years) I remember it was a nice time. We always used to come there. All people were well dressed. It was a real holiday. We had a meal, sang songs, enjoyed the nature. (Oleksandra Venger, 85 years old now) After the submersion many families left to different places in Ukraine. But most of them came back later to live near their native land. I left to Mykolayiv with my parents, but in 4 years we came back and bought a house in Chapaevka (Zolotonosha region). (Peter Korniyenko, 64 years, a former Samovicya villager) They had a plan to build an agro city about 25 kilometers away, but the plan was not realized. Now, even 30 years later you can see the islands of the former villages. (Ivan Zguchenko, now lives in Sagunyvka) The village Samovicya was situated 8 kilometers on northern-eastern part of Cherkassy. Before the submersion it had about 312 homesteads that makes 1278 villagers. The village appeared in XVII century as a Cossack sentry post on the Dnieper. A river Zolotonoshka crossed the village. During the World War II the village was totally destroyed. It was rebuilt again in 1950. There was a school, a shop and a medicine center in the village. People even planned to build their own water power station. | |
