Originally comes form cossack family. In 1899-1903 – did military service. On the September 4, 1903 Sylvester, being a corporal of the 42 Yakutsks infantry division, was transferred to the military reserve. But in August 1904 he got under mobilization and till December, 16 1905 participated in battles. He was newer wounded. Received a "Dark-bronze medal in memory of Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905” as a reward.
