Samovicya

Foundation of the village
Local old-timers tell that the village Samovicya was founded by four barge haulers that came from Zaporizhska Such. They arranged temporary building on the hill where a church was built later. They were engaged in fishing in the river Somovytsa and in the nearest lakes. That area still has a lot of fish after the floods.

The Name  of village
The name of the village came from the name of the river Somovicya that flows nearby in the southern part of the village. Till now much fish, mainly sheat-fishes, is caught here every year. According to the  church documents, during the period  from 1761 to 1887 this village was named "Somovicya” and later, since 1887, second letter in the name of the village  "o” was changed to "a”. That is why, nowadays, it is  named Samovicya.
Up to the 1761 village Samovicya had no church and was attached to Assumption church (presently Vvedenskaya) of the nearby village Mutikhi.  There is a story about the villager Clement Zakharchenko and his wife who in 1759 or in 1760 left to the neighboring village Mytukh on Sunday dominical to sanctify eater. On the way home the horses got frightened of something and ran so fast that a cubalca (national hat) fell of his wife’s head. They were looking for cubalca for a long time, but didn’t manage to find. That’s why Clement Zakharchenko, in anger, promised himself never to go to the other village’s churches anymore. The same year, together with his fellow-villagers, they got permission to build church in Samovicya for their own money.
